Working principle of the MRI Scanner service:
The main magnetic field of the imaging device is generated by a superconducting electromagnet in which an electric current is circulated. No presence of metal is permitted in the MRI room. Once the current flows through the coil, it will flow without dissipating as it suffers no resistance.
The power that initiated the current can then be disconnected: the current and the magnetic field that results will continue as long as the temperature is kept sufficiently low thanks to liquid helium.
The risk with Helium:
Helium is odourless, non-flammable and non-toxic, but the patient should be removed at once from the examination room since oxygen depletion provides a risk of asphyxiation, and there is temperature danger from the very cold gas.
If the evolution of the escaping gas and depletion of oxygen has increased the pressure in the room so much, as, to prevent the opening, to the examination room, the window between the scan room and the control area should be broken to release the pressure.
Systems should be fitted with a venting system, which expels the escaping gas to the outside air. If this system fails, cold helium gas may spread throughout the patient area.
